To enhance alternative methods to litigation “Legal Affairs Department” completes arbitration cases amounting to more than (12) billion dirhams over five years

As part of its role to represent the Government and Government entities in claims and disputes before competent judicial entities, conciliation and arbitration centers and bodies, the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department affirmed that, during the last five years, it has completed arbitration cases with a financial value of more than (12) billion dirhams, in (31) arbitration cases.

The Department explained, in conjunction with Dubai Arbitration Week, that these efforts stem from its keenness to assist Government entities in the methods they pursues as alternatives to litigation, whether through mediation, amicable settlement procedures, or through arbitration via an agreement between the two parties to the dispute in order to resolve their disputes through arbitration, in accordance with legal procedures and rules, in which the arbitration tribunal reaches a binding decision on the dispute. In some cases, the Department reaches an agreement to settle the dispute amicably between the parties, and this agreement between the two parties to the dispute ends the arbitration procedures.

For his part, His Excellency Dr. Lowai Mohamed Belhoul, Director General of the Department, explained that the diversity of arbitration cases that the Department deals with contribute to enriching the expertise of its team in this regard. Arbitration cases included, for instance, local and international disputes related to construction contracts, technical systems in the health sector, others such as contracts for developing plots of land, and disputes related to the establishment of energy projects and infrastructure projects.

His Excellency Dr. Belhoul added that the Department is eager to enhance the capabilities of its relevant teams through continuous training, to identify best practices, legislative and judicial developments, to ensure continuous development, diversify knowledge, skills and experience, and enable the proper management of arbitration cases efficiently and effectively, which may sometimes entail appointing and managing law firms and seeking the assistance of experts in certain arbitration cases involving highly technical aspects, for which the Department selects the best international law firms in Dubai at various local, regional and global levels, to ensure reaching the appropriate arbitration decisions and their execution.
