Coinciding with the International Translation Day The Legal Affairs Department Raises Awareness of its Employees about Techniques of Legal Translation

The Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department held a workshop aimed at raising awareness of its employees about the techniques and tools of legal translation, in conjunction with the International Translation Day, celebrated every year on 30th of September.

The workshop presented by Dr. Bashar Malkawi and Abdel Moneim El Kot, from the Legal Translation Section of the Department, highlighted the importance of accurate legal translation, which requires mastery and deep understanding of both source and target languages as well as accuracy in communicating ideas honestly, responsibly and reliably. Accurate translation hinges upon the selection of correct terminology and phrases that convey the meanings intended in the source text, in both written translation and consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.

The focal points of the workshop addressed the legislation regulating the profession of translation in the United Arab Emirates and highlighted the importance of taking into account the specific terminology and expressions used in the legal language of the country where the legislation is issued. Consequently, a translator must be aware of these issues while translating various legal documents such as contracts, agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other legal documents.

The presenters concluded the workshop by outlining modern trends in legal translation, the skills required to ensure the target language is clear and understandable, as well as the most important features of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools that aid in the process of translation and the challenges associated with use of new technologies.
