Legal practitioners from the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department Obtain International Accreditation in Mediation

The World's Highest Accreditation in the Industry

As part of the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department's efforts to continuously develop the skills of its employees, six legal practitioners from the Department obtained the international accreditation as accredited mediators in civil and commercial disputes. The accreditation was granted by the International Mediation Institute, which offers the world's highest accreditation in the field.

His Excellency Dr. Lowai Mohammed Belhoul, Director General of the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department, affirmed, in this regard, that obtaining this accreditation is an additional impetus to the Department's endeavours in settling complaints and disputes in which the Government of Dubai or one of its affiliated entities is a party, as the Department, under its establishing Law No. (32) of 2008, is tasked with receiving complaints and claims made against the Government and Government entities in the Emirate of Dubai, and seeking amicable settlement.

Skills Development

His Excellency Dr. Belhoul explained that, last year, the Department, in collaboration with the the European Center (ADR Center), which specializes in the field of mediation, launched a training program in Arabic and English for the mediation of civil and commercial disputes. The training was attended by 20 legal practitioners from the Department, in addition to 59 participants from government entities in the Emirate of Dubai and legal consultancy firms registered with the Department to strengthen partnership ties with the relevant entities to develop legal skills and expertise in the Emirate of Dubai.

The program concludes with the trainees obtaining international accreditation from the International Mediation Institute as accredited mediators in resolving civil and commercial disputes; The Department has completed the development of its employees' skills by obtaining the highest accreditation, which included evaluating their experiences and skills as professionals and experts in this field, after the first batch passed the assessment employees and were ranked the highest as accredited mediators in resolving civil and commercial disputes.

A Milestone Achievement

The Director General of the Department affirmed that, with this milestone achievement, the Department becomes the only entity in the Arab region and North Africa that boast this impressive number of mediators holding this type of accreditation, and is also the only entity in the world that employs a team speaking Arabic as their native language and holding this international accreditation. In addition to their proficiency in mediation in both Arabic and English, the team is fluent in four other languages, which reflects the diversity and uniqueness of the communication channels used in resolving cases with a view to reaching an amicable solution to disputes, and avoiding resorting to courts where possible thanks to a work team that masters the techniques of professional mediators, in line with the best international standards and practices.

Enhance results

In turn, Legal Counsel Shaikha Alqattan, Director of Government Support and Legal Services Directorate, and one of the accredited legal practitioners, expressed her pride in such a global achievement which adds to the Department's accomplishments and its continuous endeavor to foster the positive results of mediation in government disputes, and to acquire skills that contribute to boosting the technical levels in this inherent task assigned to the Department, in accordance with international best practices. Alqattan noted that this achievement is the fruit of the Department leadership's support to adopt and apply various negotiating tools in resolving disputes, in a manner that guarantees excellent government legal services.

 In the same context, His Excellency Dr. Belhoul honored legal counsel of the Department who have been accredited: Shaikha Alqattan, Mahmoud Mourad, and Zarine Habeeb, along with legal staff Rama Saleh, Safira Khan, and Anisha Suresh, in appreciation of their efforts made in achieving this milestone which adds to the other achievements and efforts made by teams in all organizational units of the Department to enhance its strategy and perform its tasks in the best possible way.
