The Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department Organises an Awareness-raising Workshop on “How to Deal with People of Determination”
The Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department, in collaboration with Tamkeen Institute, organised an interactive awareness-raising workshop to inform employees on "How to Deal with People of Determination". The workshop focused on finding appropriate ways to eliminate communication barriers, which may hinder communication with people of determination and therefore ensures that they are assisted and integrated fully in society.
Held at the Department's headquarters "H.H. Dubai Ruler's Court", the workshop ran a number of interactive activities to increase awareness specifically with relation to visually impaired people of determination. These activities included training on how to read and write Braille, a briefing about the benefits of the white cane and the tactile ground surface indicators for visually impaired individuals together with a presentation highlighting the importance of precise verbal communication to compensate for the loss of vision.
The workshop also provided training on how to communicate with people of determination who have either mobility issues or hearing impairments by introducing attendees to appropriate methods to deal with wheelchair users and, the basics of sign language.
For his part, His Excellency Dr. Lowai Mohamed Belhoul, Director General of the Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department affirmed that this initiative comes in implementation of the National Policy for Empowering People of Determination launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai in order to create an inclusive and restriction-free society for all.
His Excellency Dr. Lowai noted that as part of its community responsibility, the Department strives to create an environment for customers, who may be people of determination, by providing channels of communication that meet their needs. Dr. Belhoul added that the Department has formed a permanent committee to launch and implement initiatives in support of the "My Community... A City for Everyone" Initiative which aims to transform Dubai into a "people of determination friendly" city by 2020.
